Sail Sydney wrapped up its Olympic class section with national team and squad members winning six of the eight fleets.

Australian Sailing Squad members Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries made a late charge to win the women’s 470 ahead of Rio Olympians Carrie Smith and Jaime RyanMarlena Berzins finished with two bullets to secure the Laser Radial title and Australian Sailing Team members David Gilmour and Joel Turner emerged victorious in the 49er.

Jake Lilley took out the Finn class, while Mat Belcher and Will Ryan maintained a perfect scorecard to take out the 470 men’s class.

“The racing was tighter than the scorecard indicated,” Belcher said.

“Sometimes the scorecard doesn’t reflect how tight the racing really is. It was just great to be out there with the young up and coming crews getting some good racing in.”

Another day of strong winds for the final day of Sail Melbourne International (29 November to 3 December 2017) meant an early finish to the event with the last day of Invited class racing called off. Olympic classes also finished one day early and wrapped up on Saturday, 2 December with medal winners decided after a three-day race series (29 Nov to 1 December 2017).

“This has been a very unusual weather pattern and we had 20 to 25 knots all night. The forecast is that it will stay like that all day as well. Even if some of the classes could cope with that wind speed, what they could not cope with is the sea state we have out there. In the channel we have two to three metre waves,” Principal Race Officer (PRO) Mark Taylor explained the situation. Continue reading “2017 Sail Melbourne – VIDEO”

The final Hydrofoil Pro Tour event of the year took place in Sydney at Georges River Sailing Club on Dolls Point, Botany Bay, in full view of Sydney’s majestic skyline.

The men’s division was pretty much sewn up by the start of the event with Nico Parlier, who has dominated this tour for the last two years, having won the previous two events in Mauritius and Germany, and 16 year-old American rider Dani Moroz had cut a swathe through the women’s division at the penultimate event in October and was now a shoe-in for the women’s title.

The event kicked off with solid winds on day one which then settled down to a perfect 10-15 knot breeze, ideal racing conditions, for the rest of the four day regatta and the scene was set for a dream end to the tour.

One of Australia’s biggest junior sailing state competitions was contested in October when the NSW Youth Championships descended upon the gorgeous Lake Macquarie on the NSW Central Coast.

Hopefuls from across the state, as well as entrants from Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia – and even one from New Zealand – competed in the last of the nation’s state-based youth regattas for the year.

The event, hosted by South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club, which featured nearly 400 youngsters in 288 entries across 20 Classes, including Australian Sailing Team youth representatives, windsurfers Hailey Lea of Queensland and Alex Halank from NSW. In September of 2017, Hartas Productions provided regatta video coverage for the 2017 WASZP Cup Norway event in the North of Norway. For the first time ever, a sailing event was held on the spectacular Lake Bygdin, about four hours drive north of Oslo, and the amazing WASZP class would have the privilege to foil across its gorgeous waters.

The WASZP Cup Norway is the the key event for the Norwegian WASZP class community and there were 20 boats who entered in this years edition, including two boats from Sweden.

Unfortunately, due to lack of wind, there was no racing on the first day of the event, but on day 2, the breeze came in and the sailors were super excited to get out and race despite the near freezing temperatures!

The first ever International WASZP Games in August 2017 were a huge success, and Hartas Productions was proud to be the official video provider for the event!

It was a fitting finale to the first International WASZP Games at Campione on Lake Garda. Harry Mighell from Sorrento in Victoria, Australia, did a horizon job on the fleet in light 7 to 10 knot marginal foiling conditions.

Race 9 started in a patchy light breeze from the South, that swung around the compass right from the start. The fleet of 53 WASZP’s packed the start line, low riding off on starboard tack. This time the shift further to true South forced the majority to take the left side of the course sailing low towards Malcesine on the East side of the Lake. A number of competitors fell into holes or off the foils stopping dead to let clusters of other WASZP’s past.

The 2017 Moth Worlds were spectacular! The best sailors from around the world, fresh out of the America’s Cup, all descended onto the legendary Lake Garda, for the largest and most prestigious Moth World Championships EVER!

At this event, we had many sailors from various America’s Cup teams, who relished the opportunity to race against their team mates and rival teams alike in the same class of boat. With over 220 boats in the fleet, it was impressive to see how densely saturated the fleet was with Olympians, past World Champions and AC sailors alike. The 2017 Moth Worlds is definitely going to be one that is remembered!
